Meet Glewco, the almost unicorn derby horse. I don’t know about your school, but at my daughter’s school, you can make the horses look pretty much however. This is what we ended up with….a magical rainbow horse lady.

When I looked on Pinterest, I didn’t see many examples of derby stick horses so I thought I would throw mine out there for an example. I didn’t use any templates or anything sooooooo, it’s not a tutorial but rather something you can knock off!

ALSO, THIS WOULD BE MAGICAL WITH A HORN AND IF YOU MADE A SMALL HANDFUL, SO CUTE FOR A KID’S PARTY FAVOR! You know, puttin’ my party pants out there on that one.

I made this entire horse out of felt, a feather boa, and the insides of an old pillow! I used only scissors and hot glue to put it all together. And of course, a wooden dowel.

Unfortunately, it cost me 26 dollars at Hobby Lobby, which included the price of her t shirt I made “jockey silks” out of. I wish I could wow you and say it was 5 bucks for everything. Boo. The plush fabric for the head was 10 bucks for one sheet which I didn’t see until the register so, dodge that bullet.

Now meet Glewco, named after a diabetic alert dog we know of.  It’s a play off of the word glucose and I think it’s a super cool name.  My daughter has type 1 diabetes, so it was fun and fitting.

I think this horse has a personality.  Just wait til it smiles at you…which is what I feel like it does across the room from me.

She picked out the colors of her jockey “silks” and wanted her geometric shape to be circles because they would look like glucose tabs aka something she may eat for a low blood sugar.  We added the G for Glewco for good measure after I saw some silks with letters on them.  She will wear white fitted pants, tuck in her shirt, and have on knee socks and a jockey hat as well which I have no idea what I’m doing there.

This whole project was maybe an hour max.  I actually really enjoyed it and I couldn’t believe how well it turned out!  Sorry there aren’t any instructions because I made it up as I went.  I hope it inspired some stick horse ideas for your child’s derby or future party favor!
